What Causes Pain on the Top of Your Foot?

Pain on the top of your foot is one of the more infrequent causes of foot trouble, but a variety of circumstances and conditions can create pain and discomfort in this location causing difficulty with standing, walking, and exercising.

Some of the reasons for pain on the top of the foot include the following:

●     FracturesThe tiny bones in the foot are very delicate and dropping a heavy object on your toes can cause serious injury. A stress fracture on the top of the foot can be caused by structural deficiencies and reduced bone density.

●     Shoes that are too tight—Tight fitting shoes create substantial pressure that can contribute to swelling and tenderness to the soft tissue on the top of the foot.

●     Diseases that affect the feet—A variety of arthritic diseases including gouty arthritis may cause tenderness and fluid retention around the joints on the top of your foot. Diabetic nerve damage, and tendonitis can also create pain in this location.

●     Hormone changes—Women experiencing pregnancy or menopause may notice a rise in pain on the top of the foot caused by shifts in hormone balance.

●     Age—Your bones and muscles weaken as you age contributing to possible pain on the top of the foot.
